How often should you actually get a facial?
By Sylwia Kaczanowski, Licensed Esthetician
The honest answer is every four to six weeks for most people, and the reason has nothing to do with filling a calendar. It tracks the skin’s natural turnover cycle — roughly how long it takes for a new cell to travel from the base of the epidermis to the surface and shed. Treating in rhythm with that cycle means each appointment works on skin that has actually changed since the last one.
Anything much more frequent and you are exfoliating live tissue rather than dead cells. That is where people get into trouble.
When more often makes sense
There are cases where we start closer together and space out once things settle:
- Active congestion. Clearing built-up blockage can take two or three appointments two to three weeks apart before we drop back to maintenance.
- The first three months of a new routine. If we have changed your home products significantly, seeing you sooner lets us catch a reaction early rather than after eight weeks of damage.
- A treatment series. Microneedling protocols run on their own schedule — usually four to six weeks apart across three to six sessions.
When you are overdoing it
The signal is almost always the same, and it is not the one people expect. Skin that is being over-treated does not look irritated at first. It looks tight, shiny and a bit too smooth — and it stings when you apply things that never used to sting.
That is a compromised barrier, and the instinct at that point is usually to book another treatment to fix it. The correct move is the opposite: stop, simplify to a cleanser, a bland moisturiser and SPF, and give it three weeks.
What matters more than frequency
Honestly? What you do the other twenty-nine days.
An appointment every four weeks with a good, consistent home routine will outperform an appointment every two weeks with an inconsistent one, every time. Professional treatments accelerate what your routine is already doing. They do not substitute for it.
If you are only going to take one thing seriously, make it daily SPF. Nothing done in my studio survives sun exposure you are not protecting against.
The short version
Book every four to six weeks, more often only if we are working through something specific, and treat any new stinging as a reason to slow down rather than a reason to come in sooner. Skin rewards consistency far more than intensity.
